“Sun is the living form of AUM.”
History of Gayatri Mantra:
It is one of the oldest mantras, and generally thought of as beingamongst the highest and most powerful mantras of all. This mantra is therefore often referred to as “the Mother of the Vedas”.
The Gayatri Mantra is first recorded in the Rig Veda which was written in Sanskrit about 2500 to 3500 years ago, and by some reports, the mantra may have been chanted for many generations before that.
Gayatri Mantra might be translated as: a prayer of praise that awakens the vital energies and gives liberation.
In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna had proclaimed to Arjuna– “Among all the mantras, I am the Gayatri”.
How and when to Chant the Gayatri Mantra:
The ideal times for chanting the mantra are three times a day – at dawn, mid-day, and at dusk. The maximum benefit of chanting themantra is said to be obtained by chanting it 108 times. However, one can chant it for 18 or 36 times when pressed for time. The syllables of the mantra are said to positively affect all the chakras or energy centers in the human body – hence, proper pronunciation and enunciation are very important.
Word meanings:
The word is Bhur means where we are – Bhu-loka – the world of our experience.
The next word is bhuvah. Bhuvar-loka is the world of mental fluctuations. It is the support, the background of our experience. Our present position of experience is the effect of our mind waves.
Sva-loka, however, is the plane of decision, the world of intelligence(Buddhi-loka).
tat – “that.” “That” is shown by the sun which in this context indicates the soul.
savitur generally means surya, thesun. And the sun means, figuratively, that which shows or illuminates; that by which we cansee. It is the soul who gives light to this world, who gives us an understanding of the environment, the world of perception.
Varenyam means pujya: worshipable, venerable. This indicates that although within this plane – the objective world – the soul is the subject, there is another domain which is to be venerated and worshiped by the soul. That is the Supersoul area.
Bhargo means the super subjective area, the area of the Supersoul.
The word bhargo means “more subtle than the soul,” and “holding a more important position than the soul.” So this means the Supersoul, the Paramatma.
Deva means “who is beautiful and playful”
“bhargo devasya dhimahi”:
means
Come and let us meditate on the soul of all souls.
“Dhiyo Yonah: Prachodayat” means
May You guide our intellects in the right pathways.
